Police Officer gets life imprisonment over 2019 murder case

A Nigerian police officer, Olalekan Ogunyemi has been given a life sentence by the Lagos High Court in Ikeja for the murder of Kolade Johnson, a football enthusiast.

According to the report, the victim was watching a football game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur on March 31st 2019 at a viewing center in Mangoro, Ikeja Lagos when the a suspect who was attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad shot him for no reason.

The suspect was then taken into custody and dismissed from the Police Force as a result of Nigerians’ fury.

In 2019, he was then charged with murder in case ID/9776C/2019 between the State of Lagos and Ogunyemi Olalekan.

Justice Adenike Coker, the trial judge, found the defendant guilty of the offence and sentenced him to life in prison with the condition that he serve a minimum of 25 years in jail on Thursday.

The judge also imposed a life sentence for manslaughter on the fired police officer.

Despite being first accused of murder, Olalekan was ultimately found guilty of manslaughter by the court.
