Quest 1 Nears Retirement: No More New Apps After April

Owners of the original Meta Quest headset, buckle up! Starting April 30th, 2024, the device won’t be able to run brand new apps.

Meta announced this recently, following their initial steps to phase out the Quest 1 in January 2023 by dropping support for their social apps Parties and Horizon Home. With the release of Quest Pro in late 2022 and Quest 3 in late 2023, Meta’s focus has shifted to mixed reality features.

This move won’t affect existing apps on your Quest 1, and Meta will continue providing critical bug fixes and security patches until August 2024. However, developers won’t be able to submit new apps that work on the Quest 1 after April.

The future of Quest 2, still on sale alongside the newer models, remains unclear. With a similar five-year lifespan as Quest 1, it might follow a similar path. But with Meta still selling Quest 2, it’s uncertain how soon support will end.
