With Obaseki, I won’t drag power — Edo Dep Gov, Omobayo Godwins

In recent political developments in Edo State, Nigeria, the newly sworn-in Deputy Governor, Omobayo Godwins, has expressed his unwavering loyalty to his superior, Governor Godwin Obaseki. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Godwins assured that he would not engage in power struggles with Governor Obaseki.

Emphasizing his commitment to following the governor’s directives, he highlighted his willingness to leverage his strengths to add value to the administration. At 37 years old, Godwins acknowledged that he is still learning on the job and expressed contentment with his current position, stating that he is not in a hurry to challenge the governor.

Godwins also asserted that he enjoys substantial grassroots support from his base in Akoko Edo, which he believes will contribute to the success of the administration. However, amidst this affirmation of loyalty, a significant political upheaval unfolded with the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

Shaibu, who served alongside Governor Obaseki since November 12, 2016, was impeached following a prolonged political feud between the two erstwhile allies.

Shaibu, vehemently rejecting his impeachment, condemned the action as a threat to democracy. He attributed his removal from office to his ambition to contest the 2024 governorship election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Shaibu accused the governor of orchestrating his impeachment due to this ambition, which he asserted is a constitutional right for all Nigerian citizens.

The discord between Obaseki and Shaibu escalated over time, with both parties levying accusations against each other. Governor Obaseki accused Shaibu of plotting to overthrow him, while Shaibu accused the governor of influencing the state assembly to impeach him.

Tensions heightened during the PDP governorship primary, where Shaibu contested and declared himself the winner in parallel with the party’s official announcement of businessman Ighodalo as the flag bearer.
