SSANU, NASU call off strike after meeting with education ministe
The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) halted their strike after holding a brief meeting with Education Minister Adamu Adamu in Abuja on Saturday.
However, activities at public universities are expected to continue to be restricted as the ASUU strike continues.
Calling attention to the suspension of the SSANU and NASU strikes on Thursday, Minister Adam said the ASUU opposed the government’s proposal for “no work and no pay” rule.
ASUU Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Osodeke told Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday that outstanding wages had to be settled before lectures would return to classes.
“Other unions go on strike and come back, all those periods for which you are on strike, you don’t need to do the backlog of work.” He explained.
The ASUU President also said the union did not need a sympathizer for the government’s withholding of teachers’ wages, insisting the union could “take care” of its members.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14th.
