The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, has dispelled worries about the party’s alleged fragmentation that may follow the upcoming governorship primaries on April 20th.
Adetimehin gave the assurance at a meeting with party governorship aspirants in Akure, emphasising that the primary’s outcome would ultimately strengthen and unify the APC. He expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would be impressed by the conduct of the primaries and the chosen candidate.
“Failing to get our acts together during this exercise would send the wrong signals from the President’s political base,” Adetimehin cautioned. Highlighting the unprecedented use of a direct primary system for the party’s gubernatorial selection, he stressed the importance of clear communication regarding the National Working Committee’s guidelines.
Maintaining a united front throughout the process remains a key priority, according to Adetimehin. He pledged that the State Working Committee and Executive Committee, under his leadership, would ensure a level playing field for a “free, fair, credible, and smooth” primary.
“Due process will be followed in all party decisions,” Adetimehin assured, emphasizing adherence to established rules and guidelines set forth by the National Working Committee. He warned against disruptive behaviour, including violence, hate speech, and property damage.
“A Disciplinary Committee will be established to address any infractions,” Adetimehin cautioned, referencing the party’s constitution.
The chairman emphasised the importance of selecting the strongest candidate from a pool of qualified aspirants. He expressed confidence that this candidate would lead the party to victory in the November 16th governorship election.
While acknowledging the past challenges faced by the party, Adetimehin stressed that overcoming these obstacles would reveal the APC’s true strength.
