In a recent exchange of words, Minister of Works, David Umahi, engaged in a heated verbal duel with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project. Atiku had criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, alleging secrecy and favouritism in awarding the project to Hitech, a company linked to Tinubu’s ally, Gilbert Chagoury.
However, Umahi dismissed Atiku’s remarks as ill-informed, stating that the former Vice President lacked an understanding of the project’s details.
Umahi, speaking to reporters in Port Harcourt after inspecting road projects, called Atiku’s statement “unfortunate” and challenged him to approach him for clarification rather than targeting the President.
He emphasized the prudency of the Tinubu administration and expressed readiness to disclose the project’s cost to the public. Umahi reiterated the significance of the coastal road in national development, highlighting its potential to connect various regions of the country.
In response, Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, urged the Tinubu government to be transparent about the project’s cost, emphasizing the public’s right to know. Atiku urged the administration to address the concerns raised regarding the project’s procurement process.
