Gospel Singer Mercy Chinwo Sues Over Defamatory Social Media Posts

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa, have filed a defamation lawsuit against five social media users. The lawsuit stems from comments made online after the couple shared a photo of their newborn son.

The defendants, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, DJ Spoiltkid, Terrence Ekot, and Samuel Agozie, allegedly claimed that the baby resembled another gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey, and implied he was the father.

Chinwo and Uzochikwa accuse the defendants of cyberstalking, injurious falsehood, and cyber intimidation. Their legal team, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi, argues that the social media posts violated Sections 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act of 2015. They allege the comments damaged the couple’s reputation globally.

Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna of the Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrate Court has summoned the defendants to appear on April 23, 2024, to face the charges.

Nathaniel Bassey Also Takes Legal Action

Meanwhile, Nathaniel Bassey, the gospel singer mentioned in the social media posts, has filed a separate complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) against four of the individuals: Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid.

Bassey’s lawyers argue that the comments constitute defamation and cyberstalking under Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act. They emphasize the potential damage of such online statements, including reputational harm, marital strain, and lasting consequences.

Bassey’s team urges the IGP to investigate the matter, apprehend the suspects, and ensure justice is served to deter similar actions in the future.
