Key players in Delta State’s hospitality sector have sounded the alarm over the detrimental impact of inconsistent power supply on their businesses, particularly in areas like Uvwie, Warri, Sapele, Ughelli, and Udu.
Stakeholders attribute the persistent power outages to what they describe as “power racketeering” among certain officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). According to them, some individuals within these organizations have been diverting electricity meant for commercial areas to residential zones, selling it to the highest bidders.
Expressing their concerns, stakeholders urge the Delta State government to intervene urgently. They call upon authorities to hold TCN and BEDC management accountable, ensuring that adequate electricity is supplied to businesses across the state.
Alternatively, stakeholders advocate for proactive measures, suggesting that the government explore options for alternative power sources, akin to recent initiatives witnessed in Aba, Abia State.
Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders in Warri, Delta State, Mr. Austin Wareyai, CEO and chairman of Lascurt International Hotel in Uvwie, voices the frustrations felt by businesses. He highlights the adverse effects of electricity racketeering, citing not only the challenges posed by erratic power supply but also the financial strain of relying on diesel generators.
