The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has fired back at Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, following his comments on the arrest of Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky.
Okuneye, a popular crossdresser, was arrested by the EFCC last week on charges of currency mutilation and money laundering. He pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
Odinkalu, however, took to social media to criticize the arrest, suggesting the EFCC was either “idle” or misusing its power. He questioned the agency’s priorities, implying a disconnect from the concerns of Nigerians.
The EFCC responded swiftly on their social media platform, condemning Odinkalu’s remarks as “irresponsible and lacking in decorum.” While acknowledging his right to free speech, the EFCC emphasized the importance of responsible commentary that upholds public trust in law enforcement.
“The Commission will not hesitate to take legal action against disrespectful comments targeting its lawful mandate,” the statement warned. Odinkalu, however, remained defiant, accusing the EFCC of attempting to silence criticism.
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky’s arrest continues to spark debate online, with Nigerians divided on the EFCC’s actions.
