In a significant breakthrough for public safety, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended a notorious armed robbery kingpin, Chukwuemeka Oputa, also known as “Pounds and Dollars.” This arrest comes after months of tireless investigation and collaboration within the police force.
Oputa, believed to be the leader of a dangerous armed robbery gang, was apprehended on April 4th, 2024, around 2:00 PM. This decisive action by the FCT Police Command follows the arrest of another gang member, Moses Hassan, back on February 14th, 2024. Hassan’s capture served as a crucial piece of the puzzle, leading investigators to Oputa and ultimately dismantling the entire criminal operation.
A Web of Crime Unravelled
Following Hassan’s arrest, a dedicated police team meticulously pieced together the evidence. Their investigation led to the successful capture of three additional gang members:
- Praise Etta, a 30-year-old from Cross River State.
- Rafael Dav, also known as Raffy, is a 28-year-old from Benue State.
- Thomas Akange, a 38-year-old, is also from Benue State.
The apprehension of these individuals dealt a significant blow to the robbery gang’s operations. All four suspects have reportedly confessed to their involvement in a series of armed robberies and other criminal activities within the FCT. Additionally, the investigation revealed a link between the gang and a notorious cult group named Vikings, raising concerns about a potential network of criminal activity.
Securing the Capital: Recovered Weapons and Ongoing Investigation
The FCT Police Command’s operation yielded a significant haul of weapons used by the gang in their criminal activities. These include:
- Four locally-made AK47 rifles
- Three rifles utilising cartridges
- An English pistol
- A locally-made pistol
- A Dane gun
The recovered weapons serve as a stark reminder of the potential danger this gang posed to residents of the FCT. While these weapons have been seized, authorities are continuing their investigation to locate any additional items the suspects may have hidden.
A Commitment to Public Safety
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, applauded the efforts of his officers in dismantling this dangerous gang. He emphasised the FCT Police Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of FCT residents. CP Igweh urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police emergency lines. This collaborative approach between law enforcement and the community is essential for creating a safer FCT for all.
The apprehension of “Pounds and Dollar” and his associates sends a powerful message to criminals operating within the FCT. The FCT Police Command has demonstrated its dedication to dismantling criminal organisations and ensuring the safety of the capital city. By working together, residents and law enforcement can build a stronger, safer FCT.
