The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a weather alert for Saturday, predicting scorching temperatures and scattered thunderstorms across the country.
In its weather report released on Saturday, NiMet warned of a significant rise in the heat index, raising concerns about heat stress in many regions. The agency urged the public to take precautions, including staying well-hydrated and avoiding strenuous activity, particularly during peak sun hours between noon and 4 pm.
“We advise the public to stay well hydrated,” NiMet stated. “Reduce strenuous physical activities during peak hours, that is between 12 and 4 pm.”
NiMet also advised residents to wear sunglasses and hats when outdoors, and for parents to take extra care to keep infants cool and comfortable.
The weather forecast predicts morning thunderstorms in coastal areas of Lagos, Niger, Kwara, and Kebbi states. Elsewhere, Saturday will begin with partly cloudy skies with sunny intervals, particularly in the northern regions. By afternoon and evening, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the southern and north-central regions, including parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.
NiMet warned of potential strong winds preceding the thunderstorms in affected areas. The agency urged the public to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant.
Furthermore, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain the latest weather information to ensure safe and efficient flight operations, prioritizing passenger safety.
