JAMB cautions parents against registering minors for UTME amid N100m lawsuit

JAMB warned parents against registering underage kids for UTME exams.

JAMB chief, Professor Oloyede, responded to a lawsuit by Mrs. Eke, who claimed her 15-year-old daughter received inappropriate messages during registration.

Oloyede denied JAMB’s involvement and reported the incident to security forces. He believes a fellow student got the contact information during registration.

“The sender wasn’t JAMB staff,” said Oloyede. “They were likely another student.”

Oloyede stressed the legal age for UTME. “The law requires six years each of pre-primary, primary, and secondary school,” he explained. “By then, a student would be 18.”

“Enrolling a 15-year-old suggests shortcuts,” he added. “The court will decide on the lawsuit.”

JAMB addressed how the phone number might have been obtained. “Registration forms require phone numbers,” said Oloyede. “The center was penalized for letting unauthorized people near the candidates.”

“We told centers to stop identifying parents during registration and will take action against involved candidates,” he continued. “Parents’ emotions shouldn’t risk their children’s academic future.”
