Tigran Gambaryan, an official of Binance Holdings Limited, appeared in court today at the Federal High Court in Abuja to face allegations of tax evasion. Gambaryan is the second defendant named in the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024, alongside the fleeing Nadeem Anjarwalla.
The charges against Binance include failing to register with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and neglecting to issue invoices to users on its trading platform, hindering the determination and payment of value-added taxes (VAT). These actions allegedly occurred while Binance offered taxable services to Nigerian subscribers.
Gambaryan arrived at the courthouse escorted by heavily armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Arraignment proceedings were ongoing at the time this report was filed.
The development comes amidst a broader conversation about cryptocurrency regulations in Nigeria. The FIRS has previously emphasized the importance of crypto platforms complying with tax regulations.
