Why is there 50 stars in the Flag?

There are 50 stars on the United States flag because there are 50 states in the country. Each star represents one state, symbolizing unity among them.

This design was adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. The stars are arranged in a pattern of alternating rows (five rows of six stars and four rows of five stars) on a blue field, known as the Union.
