The Mitochondria – The Powerhouse of the Cell: The next stages of cellular respiration—specifically the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and oxidative phosphorylation—take place in the mitochondria. Often referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell,” the mitochondria are where most of the energy is produced. After glycolysis, the pyruvate molecules enter the mitochondria, where they undergo further breakdown to produce much larger amounts of ATP, as well as carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.
