Pandas are surprisingly vocal for such a calm-looking animal! While they’re generally quiet, they do make a variety of sounds. Some of the most common ones include:
- Bleats – Similar to a lamb’s bleating, pandas often make this sound, especially when they are interacting with each other or calling for attention.
- Barks – Pandas can bark in short bursts, especially when they feel threatened or are trying to communicate over a distance.
- Humming – Baby pandas, in particular, make a humming sound when they’re content, like when they’re nursing or cuddling with their mothers.
- Growls and Grunts – These are made when pandas are irritated or trying to express discomfort.
- Chirps – Young pandas sometimes make a chirping or twittering sound, similar to a bird’s call, when they’re feeling playful or excited.
Despite their iconic image of being gentle, pandas have a range of noises they use to communicate in their solitary lives!
