Santa’s reindeer, famously introduced in the 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”), are typically listed in this order:
- Dasher
- Dancer
- Prancer
- Vixen
- Comet
- Cupid
- Donner (or “Donder” in the original text)
- Blitzen
Rudolph, the “most famous reindeer of all,” was added later in the 20th century thanks to the 1939 story by Robert L. May and the 1949 song. He is generally placed at the front of the team due to his glowing red nose, leading the sleigh through foggy or dark skies.
