The wettest place on Earth is Mawsynram, a village in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Mawsynram receives an average annual rainfall of around 467 inches (11,871 mm). This is primarily due to its location on the windward side of the Khasi Hills, where moist air from the Bay of Bengal is forced upward, causing heavy rainfall. The combination of its geographic position and monsoonal winds makes Mawsynram the record holder for the highest annual rainfall.
