  • A falling apple: Gravity pulls the apple down, and there’s no force opposing gravity (or only a small air resistance force). The unbalanced force of gravity causes the apple to accelerate downward.
  • A hockey puck being hit: When a hockey stick hits a puck, the force applied to the puck is greater than the forces acting on it (friction, air resistance), resulting in a change in its motion.

Effects of Unbalanced Forces:

  1. Speed Changes: The object can speed up if the net force is in the same direction as the motion, or slow down if the net force is in the opposite direction.
  2. Direction Changes: The object can change direction if the net force is applied at an angle (e.g., turning a corner while driving).
  3. Starting or Stopping Motion: An object at rest will start moving if an unbalanced force is applied. Similarly, a moving object can stop if the unbalanced force (such as friction) is strong enough to bring it to a halt.
