The shortest surah in the Quran is Surah Al-Kawthar (Chapter 108). It consists of only three verses and is considered the shortest chapter in the Holy Quran, yet it carries deep and powerful meanings.
What Does Surah Al-Kawthar Say?
The surah is as follows:
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ (1) فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ (2) إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ (3)
Translation:
“Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], Al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise). So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him]. Indeed, your enemy is cut off.”
The Meaning and Significance
Despite its brevity, Surah Al-Kawthar holds great significance. It was revealed in Makkah to console the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during a time of distress. The surah promises him Al-Kawthar, a special river in Paradise, as a divine reward. It also reminds believers to worship Allah and assures that the Prophet’s enemies will not succeed.
Surah Al-Kawthar is often recited in prayers due to its short length and profound meaning, making it one of the most memorized surahs in the Quran.
