Male and female cattle have specific terms based on their age and role:
Male cattle:
Bull: An adult male cow that has not been castrated.
Steer: A male cow that has been castrated before reaching sexual maturity.
Female cattle:
Cow: An adult female that has had at least one calf.
Heifer: A young female cow that has not yet had a calf.
So, in short, bulls and steers are male, while cows and heifers are female.
