The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged swift action to apprehend Nadeem Anjarwalla, a Binance executive who escaped from custody. Anjarwalla’s escape occurred on March 22 while he was being held on charges including tax evasion.
Reports indicate that Anjarwalla managed to flee from an Abuja guest house where he and a colleague were detained, allegedly taking advantage of a moment when guards escorted him to a nearby mosque for prayers during Ramadan.
Speaking at a meeting with senior police commanders in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun assured the public of ongoing efforts, in collaboration with INTERPOL, to capture the fugitive. While specifics about INTERPOL’s involvement were not disclosed, the IGP expressed confidence in Anjarwalla’s eventual rearrest.
In addition to addressing the escape incident, the IGP provided insights into recent law enforcement activities. Over the past eight weeks, the police recorded significant numbers of kidnapping and homicide cases. Law enforcement efforts resulted in the arrest of 3,685 suspects involved in various crimes, with 401 kidnapped victims rescued.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of proactive policing strategies, highlighting the need for technology and intelligence-driven approaches to combat internal security threats effectively. He stressed the importance of analyzing available information to pre-empt criminal activities, disrupt illicit networks, and swiftly apprehend perpetrators.
The IGP underscored the commitment of law enforcement agencies to staying ahead of evolving threats, emphasizing continuous refinement of strategies. He noted progress made since the previous conference in February 2024, highlighting diverse initiatives aimed at curbing escalating criminal activities nationwide.
