FIFA president appeals Russia/Ukraine ceasefire as World Cup kicks off

While the World Cup is being held in Qatar, Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has urged Russia and Ukraine to agree to a one-month ceasefire.

Infantino stated that the World Cup offered a “unique platform” for peace and unity because it would be seen by approximately five billion people on television during a G20 summit in Indonesia.

“So, my plea with all of you is to stay on a temporary ceasefire for one month for the duration of the World Cup,” he stated at lunch with G20 leaders on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

He further suggested certain humanitarian passageways or “anything that could lead to the restart of talks as the first step to peace” as a substitute. You have the power to shape history because you are the leaders of the world.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, numerous international sports organizations have imposed sanctions on Russia and its athletes.
