Controversial Nigerian influencer Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, faces the possibility of spending the upcoming Eid-il-Fitri holiday in custody.
Bobrisky was arrested on April 3 and convicted on Friday by a Federal High Court in Lagos for charges of naira abuse pressed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He pleaded guilty to the charges.
The EFCC initially filed six counts against Bobrisky, four related to naira abuse and two concerning alleged money laundering. The prosecution, however, dropped the money laundering charges before Bobrisky entered his plea.
Bobrisky, a social media influencer with a large following, expressed regret for his actions and pleaded for leniency. He promised to educate his fans about the laws regarding naira abuse.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro scheduled Bobrisky’s sentencing for April 9 and ordered him to remain in EFCC custody until then. This date coincides with the first day of the Eid-il-Fitri public holiday declared by the Federal Government.
It remains unclear if the court will hold a session on that day, potentially forcing Bobrisky to spend the holiday in custody.
