NDLEA Intercepts Cocaine, Opioid Shipments Bound for US, Saudi Arabia, Europe

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has thwarted multiple attempts by drug trafficking syndicates to smuggle consignments of illicit drugs to destinations including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA disclosed that the intercepted substances included cocaine, tramadol, skunk (a potent strain of cannabis), loud, and molly. The drugs were concealed in various items such as prayer beads, board games, and female clothing.

According to the statement, operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, arrested two key suspects involved in the trafficking attempts. One of the suspects, 43-year-old businesswoman Jakpor Egware May, was apprehended at the airport's Gate ‘C’ departure hall on March 8, 2025, while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy. Upon searching her luggage, officers discovered 190 parcels of tramadol 225mg and a parcel of skunk. May admitted purchasing the drugs herself for resale in Italy.

In a separate operation at the airport’s export shed on March 11, NDLEA officers arrested a 60-year-old suspect, Yahaya Fatai Ayinla. He was attempting to ship clothing containing 400 grams of skunk to New York, USA.

Further interceptions were made at logistics companies in Lagos, where traffickers attempted to export over two kilograms of loud, molly, and tramadol concealed in Vitamin C bottles and female apparel destined for the US. Additionally, shipments of 230 grams of cocaine hidden in prayer beads, shoe soles, and board game packs intended for Saudi Arabia, Poland, and the UAE were intercepted between March 10 and March 12.

The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and ensure that those involved face the full weight of the law.
