FRSC Commits to Adhering to Court Ruling on Faded Number Plates

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that it is thoroughly reviewing a recent court ruling regarding faded vehicle number plates and has pledged full compliance with the judgment.

On January 17, 2025, the Federal High Court in Lagos issued an order prohibiting the FRSC from arresting or fining motorists with faded number plates. The court's decision came in response to a lawsuit filed by Chinwike Ezebube, who argued that the FRSC, as the exclusive designer and producer of vehicle number plates in Nigeria, bears responsibility for their quality and durability.

The case, registered as FHC/L/CS/253/2024, raised critical questions about the FRSC's accountability for the fading of number plates and its authority to penalize drivers for issues stemming from substandard production.

FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide clarified that the fading of number plates is primarily due to normal wear and tear rather than poor manufacturing quality. He emphasized that the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) of 2012, as amended, provide vehicle owners with the option to apply for replacement plates in cases of loss or damage.

Ogungbemide reiterated the FRSC's commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating, “The corps is carefully studying the court’s judgment and will not take any action that disrespects the court or its decision. FRSC is a responsible organization and will always abide by court orders and the rule of law.”

He further explained that Regulation 39 of the NRTR 2012 allows vehicle owners to request replacements for damaged or lost plates, underscoring that the fading issue is a natural consequence of prolonged use.

The FRSC's assurance of compliance reflects its dedication to maintaining public trust and adhering to legal standards while addressing concerns related to vehicle number plates
